The 11201 was one of four different test locos which were made for basically researching efficient construction of locomotives for the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. Because the lack of coal made electrification of these routes necessary, the rolling stock was changed to e-locos.

Made together with the brown and green Ae 3/6 II, the Be 3/5 was an independent construction.
