The BR 03 1073 got a new boiler in the middle of the 50s, because the first boiler, like on all locomotives of this type, has become defective very quickly because of the wrong material (St. 47). Typical for these locos with new boilers were the lateral attached sand boxes on the rotations like the ones you can find on the machines of the BR 01.
A peculiarity of this type is the conceal for coal on the tender. Point of this was to keep the coal dry and to protect the added carriages of dirt. In practical operation the mobile elements of the cover were sensitive and quickly damaged.
In 1966 the last locos of the Bundesbahn were retired and scrapped in the following years.
